Vaccination for Cervical Cancer

What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cervix — the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. The primary cause of cervical cancer is persistent infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus transmitted through intimate contact.

While cervical cancer can be serious, it is also one of the most preventable cancers in women– thanks to HPV vaccination and regular screening.

At Shree Clinic, we focus on preventive women’s health, and HPV vaccination is one of the most effective tools to protect women and young girls from this disease.

What is the HPV Vaccine?

The HPV vaccine helps the immune system develop protection against the Human Papillomavirus, which causes:

  • Cervical cancer
  • Genital warts
  • Some cases of vaginal, vulvar, and anal cancers

By receiving the HPV vaccine, women can significantly reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer in the future.

Who Should Get the HPV Vaccine?

According to global and national health guidelines:

  • Girls and young women aged 9–26 years benefit the most from the vaccine.
  • Best time to vaccinate: Between 9 to 14 years of age, ideally before the onset of sexual activity.
  • Women up to 45 years can also receive the vaccine after consulting their gynecologist.

At Shree Clinic, we recommend vaccination for both adolescents and adult women after thorough counseling and assessment.

Types of HPV Vaccines Available

There are different vaccines available that protect against various HPV strains:

  • Cervarix: Protects against HPV types 16 and 18 (responsible for 70% of cervical cancers).
  • Gardasil / Gardasil 9: Protects against multiple HPV types (6, 11, 16, 18, and others) that cause both cervical cancer and genital warts.

Your doctor will help choose the most suitable vaccine based on age and health status.

Dosing Schedule

  • For ages 9–14 years: 2 doses, 6–12 months apart
  • For ages 15 and above: 3 doses over 6 months (at 0, 1–2, and 6 months)

Vaccination is safe, well-tolerated, and provides long-term protection.

Benefits of HPV Vaccination

  • Protects against most strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer
  • Reduces risk of precancerous cervical lesions
  • Prevents genital warts
  • Offers long-term immunity
  • Promotes awareness and proactive health care among women
  • Contributes to public health by reducing cervical cancer burden
