What is IVF?

The IVF Process
IVF is performed in carefully planned stages over a few weeks:
- Ovarian Stimulation
Fertility medications are given to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs instead of one.
Regular ultrasound scans and hormone tests monitor progress. - Egg Retrieval
Mature eggs are collected from the ovaries using a fine needle under mild anesthesia. This is a short, painless procedure. - Sperm Collection and Preparation
A semen sample is processed in the lab to select healthy, motile sperm. - Fertilization in the Lab
Eggs and sperm are combined under controlled conditions. In some cases, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is performed, where a single sperm is injected into an egg for better success rates. - Embryo Culture
The fertilized eggs (embryos) are cultured for 3–5 days in the lab and carefully monitored for growth and quality. - Embryo Transfer
The best-quality embryo(s) are selected and gently placed into the uterus using a soft catheter. The procedure is painless and does not require anesthesia. - Pregnancy Test
After about 12–14 days, a blood test is done to confirm pregnancy.
