ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

What is ICSI?

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an advanced form of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) that helps couples overcome severe male or unexplained infertility.

In this procedure, a single healthy sperm is directly injected into the center of an egg using highly specialized microscopic techniques. This precise method greatly improves the chances of fertilization — even when sperm count, motility, or quality is poor.

At Shree Clinic, we recommend ICSI for couples who need a more targeted fertility approach, offering the latest technology combined with compassionate care.

When is ICSI Recommended?

ICSI is often suggested in the following cases:

  • Low sperm count (oligospermia)
  • Poor sperm motility (asthenospermia)
  • Abnormal sperm shape (teratospermia)
  • Previous failed IVF cycles
  • Obstruction in the male reproductive tract
  • Use of surgically retrieved sperm (e.g., after vasectomy or testicular biopsy)
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Fertilization failure in conventional IVF

We conduct thorough evaluations for both partners before recommending ICSI, ensuring the approach best fits their fertility needs.

How is ICSI Performed?

ICSI follows similar steps to IVF but differs during the fertilization stage.

  1. Ovarian Stimulation
The woman is given medications to produce multiple mature eggs. Progress is monitored using ultrasound and hormone tests.
  2. Egg Retrieval
The eggs are collected under mild anesthesia using a fine needle.
  3. Sperm Collection and Selection
A semen sample is collected, or sperm is obtained through surgical means if required. The healthiest, most motile sperm are carefully chosen under a microscope.
  4. Sperm Injection
A single selected sperm is directly injected into the cytoplasm (center) of each mature egg using a fine glass needle under high magnification.
  5. Embryo Culture and Transfer
Fertilized eggs (embryos) are cultured in the lab for 3–5 days before the best-quality embryo(s) are transferred into the uterus.
  6. Pregnancy Test
About two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test confirms pregnancy.

Success Rate of ICSI

ICSI has one of the highest fertilization success rates — 70–80% per egg injected — though overall pregnancy rates depend on other factors like:

  • Maternal age
  • Egg and sperm quality
  • Uterine health

At Shree Clinic, we combine medical precision, advanced lab support, and personalized monitoring to maximize success rates.

Advantages of ICSI

  • Overcomes severe male infertility
  • Ensures fertilization even with minimal sperm
  • Prevents total fertilization failure in IVF cycles
  • Useful for couples with previous IVF failures
  • Allows use of frozen or surgically retrieved sperm

Possible Risks

While ICSI is a safe and widely used technique, potential risks may include:

  • Slightly increased chance of genetic abnormalities (especially if the male partner has inherited infertility issues)
  • Low fertilization rate in some cases
  • Emotional stress due to the precision and cost of the procedure

We minimize these risks through genetic counseling, expert embryologists, and evidence-based protocols.
