TESA (Testicular sperm Aspiration)

What is TESA?

Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) is a minimally invasive procedure used to retrieve sperm directly from the testicles in men who have little or no sperm in their ejaculate. It’s often used as part of assisted reproductive techniques such as ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) or IVF, helping couples achieve parenthood even in cases of severe male infertility.

At Shree Clinic, we use TESA to assist couples where natural conception is not possible due to sperm production or blockage issues, offering safe, effective, and advanced fertility solutions.

When is TESA Recommended?

TESA is typically advised in the following situations:

  • Azoospermia (absence of sperm in semen)
  • Obstruction in the vas deferens or reproductive tract
  • Failed vasectomy reversal
  • Non-obstructive azoospermia where sperm production is reduced
  • Previous IVF or ICSI cycles with no sperm retrieved
  • Men unable to ejaculate due to medical or psychological conditions

We ensure a thorough evaluation before recommending TESA, with detailed semen analysis, hormonal assessment, and sometimes genetic counseling to determine the most suitable treatment approach.

How is TESA Performed?

TESA is a simple outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia and takes about 15–30 minutes.

  1. Anesthesia and Preparation:
The skin over the testicle is numbed using local anesthesia.
  2. Aspiration of Sperm:
A fine needle is inserted into the testis, and a small amount of tissue is aspirated (drawn out).
  3. Sperm Extraction:
The retrieved tissue is processed in a lab to extract live sperm cells.
  4. Use in ICSI/IVF:
The retrieved sperm are then used for ICSI — where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg — or stored for future fertility cycles.

TESA does not require surgical incisions, ensuring minimal discomfort and quick recovery.

Advantages of TESA

  • Enables biological fatherhood in men with azoospermia
  • Minimally invasive and performed under local anesthesia
  • Quick recovery time
  • Useful for couples undergoing ICSI or IVF
  • Option to store sperm for future use

Possible Risks

TESA is generally safe, but minor side effects may include:

  • Mild pain or swelling at the aspiration site
  • Temporary bruising
  • Rare chance of infection or bleeding

At Shree Clinic, all procedures are performed using sterile techniques and precise handling, minimizing any potential risks.
