Gestational Diabetes Mallietus

What is Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)?

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a condition in which a woman develops high blood sugar levels during pregnancy, even if she never had diabetes before. It usually appears in the second half of pregnancy and occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin to handle the extra glucose demands.

At Shree Clinic, we focus on early screening, accurate diagnosis, and individualized management of GDM to ensure a safe and healthy pregnancy for both mother and baby.

Causes of Gestational Diabetes

During pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones that help the baby grow. However, these hormones can also interfere with insulin function — leading to insulin resistance. When the pancreas cannot make enough insulin to overcome this resistance, blood sugar levels rise, resulting in gestational diabetes.

Certain factors increase the risk of developing GDM:

  • Family history of diabetes
  • Overweight or obesity before pregnancy
  • Age above 30 years
  • Previous history of GDM
  • Previous delivery of a large baby (more than 3.5 kg)
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOD/PCOS)

Symptoms of Gestational Diabetes

GDM may not always cause noticeable symptoms, which is why routine screening is important. However, some women may experience:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Increased hunger
  • Blurred vision
  • Recurrent urinary or vaginal infections

At Shree Clinic, we perform regular blood sugar tests between 24–28 weeks of pregnancy or earlier if risk factors are present.

Diagnosis at Shree Clinic

We use standard screening methods to confirm GDM, including:

  • Glucose Challenge Test (GCT): A preliminary test where blood sugar is measured one hour after consuming glucose.
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): A more detailed test done after fasting to assess how your body processes sugar.

Risks of Uncontrolled GDM

If not managed properly, gestational diabetes can affect both mother and baby:

For the Mother:

  • High blood pressure or preeclampsia
  • Increased chance of cesarean delivery
  • Higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life

For the Baby:

  • Higher birth weight (macrosomia)
  • Low blood sugar after birth
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Risk of obesity or diabetes in future

Early detection and proper care can prevent these complications.
